Jamaica's History

Jamaica has a unique history among the islands in the Caribbean. First, it was a hideaway for indigenous people who left South America and arrived to the country by boat. The indigenous tribes gave the country its name. It means “land of wood and water.” Jamaica was a colony of the Spanish for 150 years, and a British colony for 300 years. Because the island belonged to two different countries, it has contributed to the uniqueness of the culture. Jamaica achieved independence over 55 years ago. Jamaica has remained part of the British Commonwealth and has benefitted from the relationship with the United Kingdom.

Culture

The culture of Jamaica is one of a kind. We know you have heard of reggae, a musical style founded in Jamaica. The most famous reggae musician of all time, Bob Marley, was born and raised here. However, Jamaica is not only famous for reggae. Several other musical styles were born on the island as well. These other styles include ska, rocksteady, mento, dancehall, reggaeton, dub, and ragga.

Flower Hill's Secret Coconut Cake Recipe (not so secret anymore!)

Chef Gordon makes all of the dishes for our guests from scratch everyday from local, fresh ingredients. And in Jamaica you can't get any more local in cuisine than using coconuts. Coconuts have become a well established part of Jamaican life, and are used in many traditional recipes.

Our guests have many beloved Jamaican recipes that contain coconut, but today, we are so excited because we are sharing our absolute favourite in-house Coconut Cake recipe with you! A previously secret recipe that we are sharing only with you!

This recipe is one of our guests’ favorites. It is requested again and again, showing how absolutely delicious it is.

The famous Coconut Cake recipe unveiled...

Ingredients

1 and 3/4 cup sugar
1 cup butter, room temperature
4 eggs, separated
2 3/4 cup all purpose flour
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1 cup coconut milk
1 cup buttermilk
1 tsp vanilla extract
a pinch of salt
1/2 cup sweetened coconut flakes

Cream Cheese Frosting

2 cups cream cheese
1/2 cup butter, room temperature
2 cups powdered sugar
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
3 tsp Appleton rum
a pinch of salt

Instructions

Preheat oven to 350°F.

Cream butter and sugar, add 4 egg yolks, one at a time, then add coconut with vanilla extract. Mix all the dry ingredients together. Add it to the creamed mixture with buttermilk. In a bowl, whisk the egg whites with a pinch of salt until it forms a stiff peak then fold it into the wet mixture. Then fold in the sweetened coconut flakes.

Line 2 ten inch baking pans with parchment paper. Share the mixture in both pans evenly. Put to bake on the lowest rack in the oven for 20 minutes.

While the cake is baking using a mixer with a paddle, add cream cheese and butter and mix till smooth. Then add sifted powdered sugar, salt, vanilla and rum. When the cake is cooled, put it on the turntable and cover it with the cream cheese frosting, with a layer of cream cheese frosting in the middle of the cake.

Recipe serves 12 persons.

From an aqueduct used in the plantation era to grind sugar cane, to a gentle waterfall close to the 15th green which was featured in a James Bond film, taking a trip through these greens is like taking a trip through time.

White Witch

The final of these three courses is the majestic and haunting White Witch, named for the enchanting, but evil, 19th century mistress of the Rose Hall Plantation, Annee Palmer. Legend has it her ghost still frequents these greens that she once oversaw, so if you have a ball that kisses the edge of the cup but just won’t go in, you know who to blame.

When you are here you will meet Tenesha and Jessian our two housekeepers who will tidy and tend to your room each day, as well as Gertrude the laundress who works in unison with the housekeepers to care for your personal laundry as well as the bath and bed linens to keep everything fresh. You may catch sight of our three gardeners Trevor, Adrian and Jeff who work tirelessly tending the gardens and the grounds.

You will also become very familiar with Damion the head of house who leads the entire team, our two butlers Romaine and Timoy who will ensure that every need is met and your expectations are exceeded, and last but not least Chef Gordon, our private chef who will prepare scrumptious meals to your exact specifications.

When you are a guest here at Flower Hill, you become a part of the family. The most common comment that we hear from our guests is about their experiences that they had with the staff members. We are all set for Christmas here at Flower Hill.

The presents are wrapped and placed under the beautifully decorated pine tree. Even though real pine trees are hard to find here in Jamaica, we are able to get ours from the Blue Mountains where the climate and environment is more suitable for growing them.

It is always a fun adventure each year going to pick out the perfect pine tree for the villa. The one we set up this year is 10 feet tall! It is a big one and it looks so amazing standing tall in the great room in front of the beautiful blue ocean skyline.

Now that the tree is set up we are all in the holiday spirit! We want to wish you and yours a very wonderful holiday season. Enjoy every moment!

A Touch of History With Antique Elevator Doors

One thing you will notice at Flower Hill is the beautiful decor throughout the villa. We have put a lot of thought into each room, furniture, paintings, the decor and the feeling it gives people who are in it.

There are some interesting stories within and on the walls of Flower Hill. One great example of that are these very unique antique doors. Behind it is the elevator to the top and bottom floors of the villa but these special antique doors were custom fitted for this space, they were cut and modified specifically to serve as the elevator doors. It took a lot of work and patience to not destroy these antiques during the process but it was accomplished successfully.

No detail is too small to be overlooked, even the door trim was made in Jamaica specially to match the antique doors.

We have many guests ask and comment on particular decor pieces throughout the villa. Each time we hear a guest’s love, enthusiasm, or intrigue it is special and so meaningful to us because we know how much thought went into every lamp, sculpture, painting, chair, desk or antique doors.

Well as you may have guessed, it is named after the great novelist, short story writer and journalist, Ernest Miller Hemingway. The owner of Flower Hill is a literary enthusiast, and wanted to bring a small piece of literary history into the architecture of Flower Hill for guest to enjoy for years to come.

Hemingway’s unique writing style had a strong influence on the literary world, specifically 20th-century fiction. Hemingway produced countless works such as novels, short stories and non-fiction works, many of which are considered classics of American literature. Two of his largest accomplishments came when he won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction 1953 and the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954.

The extent of Hemingway's influence is seen in the tributes and echoes of his legacy in popular culture from novels, plays and movies to restaurants and furniture. It sure creates an interesting topic for our guests while they are lounging around the bar with friends and cocktails.

History: Good Hope began in 1774 as a sugar estate and grew into a village to support the workers after emancipation. The David Pinto Pottery Studio: Many regard David Pinto, master potter, as one of Jamaica’s most promising young artists. It is reflective of his warm and affable personality. Back in Jamaica after living and working abroad for a number of years, Pinto has established his studio inside one of the former plantation buildings on the Good Hope Estate, where he creates his pieces and occasionally hosts international workshops.

Wild Jamaica: Where spies and royals can be at their naughtiest

There once was an island where movie stars and royalty came to play. It was a place where Elizabeth Taylor holidayed with Noël Coward. Where the Duke of Edinburgh swam in the same turquoise waters as Sophia Loren, and Marilyn Monroe frolicked in the surf with Arthur Miller. Where Vivien Leigh and Laurence Olivier sunbathed in the nude and Ian Fleming wrote, and Lucian Freud and Sir Winston Churchill painted (but with very different results). And where everyone partied, especially Errol Flynn, with anyone he could find but particularly with the very pretty and the very young. It was Mustique before we had Mustique, St Barth's before the oligarchs bustled in. It was Kenya's Happy Valley, but with rum instead of gin. It was Jamaica.

Even then, Jamaica was a little naughtier than anywhere else. There was sunshine and palm trees and beautiful beaches, but there was also weed and sex and Noël Coward's swimming pool, known for its naked pool parties. His villa, Firefly, set high on a hill overlooking the sea, had a door on the first floor that opened out over the water; guests could leap straight in from upstairs, providing spectators with quite the view from down below.

But I'm getting ahead of myself. I'm at Ian Fleming's old home, Goldeneye, a low-slung whitewashed villa set above a perfect little sandy cove. No naked pool parties here - but this is where he banged out his Bond novels, between rum punches and affairs. You can rent the villa, which now belongs to Chris Blackwell, the founder of Island Records and the man who discovered Bob Marley and introduced the rest of the world to reggae. It is part of a ravishingly beautiful boutique hotel, with more beach villas down below and funky wooden cabanas fringing a lagoon, plus exactly the kind of laidback, rum-flavoured, no-shoes vibe you'd hope to find in Jamaica.

Much like Blackwell himself, who is spry, charming and so laidback he might as well  be lying down, with a scraggy beard and open-necked shirt and a slow, scratchy voice. You'll often see him ambling around the lush grounds of Goldeneye, between the smart, sunbathing tourists and superstars hanging out around the bar (Johnny Depp, Grace Jones, Kate Moss). He lives here with his girlfriend: 'She's younger than me. Much younger.' In her 40s, in fact - he is 80 but looks 60.

Youthful genes run strong in the Blackwell family. His mother Blanche, a beautiful socialite whose family has been in Jamaica since the 16th century, is now 104, living in Knightsbridge and sharp as a tack. 'She always says, "I love men - they make such good pets,"' drawls Blackwell. The Old Harrovian, whom the Daily Telegraph once called the 'original trustafarian' (totally unfair - he's far too cool for that), knew Fleming well as a child and worked for him as a location scout for Dr No, parts of which were filmed just down the coast. His mother had a long, fiery and very public affair with Fleming - who died in 1964 - after divorcing the Crosse & Blackwell scion, Joseph Blackwell, and the relationship spawned Coward's play Volcano, which was deemed so scandalous it wasn't staged until after his death.

Anyway, Blanche had loved to swim at Goldeneye, so Blackwell bought the property - via Bob Marley - in the Eighties. 'It wasn't Bob's scene - it was too posh and isolated. Not "street" enough,' Blackwell tells me. Blackwell then turned it into this gorgeous hotel in the Nineties, luring a fashionable new set to Jamaica's shores.

It was Errol Flynn who first brought the stars, washing up in swashbuckling fashion in the early Forties during a storm that forced his yacht to dock at Port Antonio, in the north-east. He loved it and stayed, saying it was more beautiful than any woman he'd ever known, and he'd known more than most. Fleming, on the other hand, first visited it as a naval intelligence officer (read: spy), fell in love with the place and built his estate after the war, much like Coward, who wanted to escape dreary post-war Britain. They disapproved of Flynn's antics, which reportedly included driving a Cadillac into a pool and emerging with his cigar still lit, but they were all terrific friends - Blanche Blackwell helped Coward host the Queen Mother when she visited for tea - and with them came the top crop of literary and artistic sorts, escaping the gloomy European and American winters.

Why did they all come? They all came because they all came, if you see what I mean. But also because it was far - in every sense - from conservative post-war Europe. It felt like 'another world', Blackwell tells me. 'If you wanted to make a phone call in those days, you had to book it three, four days in advance. When you were here you were on another planet - so they could live a wilder life.

The smart set still come, but now, perhaps thanks to iPhones, they're careful. No wildness, no naked pool parties - at least, not that you'd hear about. It's all very hush-hush, like Lara Hughes-Young and Tom Inskip's wedding at the Round Hill resort in March (Prince Harry was there with Meghan Markle). The tabloids were all over it, but not by invitation, and not a thing leaked about it. They're a tight-knit lot.

Back then things were wilder, and probably more fun. Hotels opened, run by a bevy of Jamaican-British posh boys educated at Eton and Harrow (plantation money) or by American WASPs. Jamaica Inn, run by the Morrows, a smart East Coast family, and still going strong, opened in the Fifties; Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller came for their honeymoon. And Round Hill, in Montego Bay, was opened by the late John Pringle, whose mother ran Sunset Lodge, a favourite of Princess Margaret's. Round Hill was a storming success. Princess Margaret also loved it there, as did Grace Kelly, Clark Gable and Noël Coward. Cole Porter famously sang in the bar. Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein wrote The Sound of Music here. John and Jackie Kennedy honeymooned in Villa 10; the 2nd Viscount Rothermere owned Cottage 16. Rex Harrison was thrown out on his honeymoon.

It was a scene, run with vim by Pringle, who loved to tell rude stories. A favourite apparently started with 'My dear, have I told you about the time Errol Flynn and I burned down a whorehouse in Trinidad?'

Everyone came to misbehave, but also because the northern coast of Jamaica is so insanely beautiful. Blackwell has arranged  for his driver, the garrulous MacGuiver, to ferry me around this verdant stretch of coast, winding away from the built-up resorts of Montego Bay and Ocho Rios (where the cruise ships stop) to the quieter reaches of the north-east, where the best villas are. It is tropical and lush, in a way that you always hope the Caribbean will be but rarely is. Enormous, Jurassic Park leaves. Misty waterfalls. Flowers the size of trumpets. Waxy creepers creeping over everything, and the cloud-brushed Blue Mountains towering behind it all. It's the kind of tropical that you imagine locals must wrestle with on a daily basis just to stop it smothering everything. Beaches are golden-hued, palm trees are plentiful and little wooden stalls by the roadside sell coconuts, jackfruit and mangoes. This corner feels ridiculously idyllic - secret, almost.

Flower Hill featured in Vogue Magazine

Michelle Ochs of Cushnie et Ochs and Matthew Kopko’s destination wedding at Flower Hill was recently covered in Vogue. The ceremony was held poolside on the upper level of the Flower Hill villa. “We were married on a floating deck in the middle of the swimming pool overlooking the Caribbean Sea,” Ochs says.
